Muira Puama (
Ptychopetalum Olacoides) is a small tree native to the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and other parts of South America. Muira Puama is probably the most famous of the many South American pro-sexual herbs - and one that is nicknamed 'Potency wood' by Brazilians - for obvious reasons!
For hundreds of years, indigenous rainforest tribes have used bark or root infusions of Muira Puama both as a tonic for couples and its benefits have been confirmed in several human trials. There are many actives in the bark - and it has been studied since the 1920's, but more recent full scale trials have led to a renewed interest in it's properties.
Early researchers discovered that both the root and bark were rich in Essential Fatty Acids, Essential oils, plant sterols, and a new alkaloid, which they named
Muirapuamine. Recent studies have shown that Muira Puama may also be helpful to the elderly - because it can possibly improve memory and brain function, and reduce nervous tension and fatigue
